Alma is a tiny town located in the state of West Virginia. With a population of 977 people and just one neighborhood, Alma is the 167th largest community in West Virginia. Much of the housing stock in Alma was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Alma is a blue-collar town, with 45.4% of people working in blue-collar occupations, while the average in America is just 24.7%. Overall, Alma is a town of sales and office workers, production and manufacturing workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Alma who work in sales jobs (13.65%), office and administrative support jobs (8.87%), and building maintenance and grounds keeping (6.14%).
Alma is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Alma's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.
One downside of living in Alma is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Alma, the average commute to work is 35.03 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.
Alma is a very car-oriented town. 97.57% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Alma is a small town, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Alma has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.
As is often the case in a small town, Alma doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The population of Alma has one of the lowest overall levels of education in the country: only 6.07% of people over 25 hold a college degree. The national average for all municipalities is 14.96%.
The per capita income in Alma in 2000 was $11,282, which is low income relative to West Virginia and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $45,128 for a family of four.
The people who call Alma home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Alma is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Alma include English, German, Irish, and Scotch-Irish.
The most common language spoken in Alma is English.
