Pepin is a very small town located in the state of Wisconsin. With a population of 1,528 people and just one neighborhood, Pepin is the 336th largest community in Wisconsin. Pepin has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Pepin is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 41.2% of the Pepin workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Pepin is a town of production and manufacturing workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Pepin who work in healthcare (8.44%), office and administrative support jobs (6.49%), and food service (6.23%).
Another important characteristic of Pepin is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 9.42% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
In Pepin, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 33.83 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. However, the town is also quite pedestrian-friendly, because many neighborhoods are very dense and have amenities close enough together that people find it feasible to get around on foot.
As is often the case in a small town, Pepin doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In terms of college education, Pepin is nearly on par with the US average for all cities of 14.96%: 15.21% of adults 25 and older in Pepin have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Pepin in 2000 was $18,315, which is middle income relative to Wisconsin and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $73,260 for a family of four.
The people who call Pepin home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Pepin is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Pepin include German, Swedish, Norwegian, English, and Irish.
The most common language spoken in Pepin is English.
