Ogema is a very small town located in the state of Wisconsin. With a population of 1,272 people and just one neighborhood, Ogema is the 363rd largest community in Wisconsin. Ogema has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Ogema is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 46.0% of the Ogema workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Ogema is a town of production and manufacturing workers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Ogema who work in office and administrative support jobs (10.05%), sales jobs (6.28%), and teaching (5.75%).
In addition, many people in Ogema have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 9.80% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One downside of living in Ogema, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 31.09 minutes every day commuting to work.
Ogema is a very car-oriented town. 97.54% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Ogema is a small town, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Ogema has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.
Ogema is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
The percentage of adults in Ogema with college degrees is slightly lower than the national average of 14.96% for all communities. 12.16% of adults in Ogema have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Ogema in 2000 was $16,707, which is lower middle income relative to Wisconsin, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $66,828 for a family of four.
