Hancock is a very small town located in the state of Wisconsin. With a population of 1,898 people and just one neighborhood, Hancock is the 298th largest community in Wisconsin.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Hancock is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 41.4% of the Hancock workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Hancock is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Hancock who work in office and administrative support jobs (16.07%), sales jobs (9.05%), and food service (5.60%).
Another important characteristic of Hancock is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 8.15% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Hancock is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Hancock's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.
As is often the case in a small town, Hancock doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In Hancock, just 10.46% of people have at least a bachelor's degree, which is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 14.96%.
The per capita income in Hancock in 2000 was $18,377, which is middle income relative to Wisconsin and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $73,508 for a family of four.
The people who call Hancock home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Hancock is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Hancock include German, Polish, English, Irish, Norwegian, and French.
The most common language spoken in Hancock is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
