Seaford is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Virginia. With a population of 3,432 people and just one neighborhood, Seaford is the 204th largest community in Virginia.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Seaford is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Seaford is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Seaford who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.99%), management occupations (12.36%), and healthcare (8.24%).
Also of interest is that Seaford has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
There are quite a few people in the armed forces living in Seaford, and when you visit or drive around town, you will see military people in and out of uniform, shopping, enjoying life, and being part of the community.
In addition, Seaford is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.
Because of many things, Seaford is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Seaford a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Seaford has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Seaford's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Seaford are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.
Seaford is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Seaford isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 98.99% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
As is often the case in a small town, Seaford doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The education level of Seaford citizens is substantially higher than the average US city or town, as 28.74% of adults in Seaford have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Seaford in 2000 was $28,905, which is wealthy relative to Virginia and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $115,620 for a family of four. However, Seaford contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
The people who call Seaford home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Seaford is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Seaford include English, German, Irish, Italian, Scottish, European, and Scotch-Irish.
