Artesian is a tiny town located in the state of South Dakota. With a population of 671 people and just one neighborhood, Artesian is the 102nd largest community in South Dakota. Artesian has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Artesian is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Artesian is a town of managers, professionals, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Artesian who work in farm management (23.16%), office and administrative support jobs (8.76%), and healthcare (6.78%).
You will also find that a lot of people in Artesian work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.
A relatively large number of people in Artesian telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 17.05% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Artesian is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
The citizens of Artesian are slightly better educated than the national average of 14.96% for all cities and towns, with 18.34% of adults in Artesian having a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
