The climate of the Western states could easily be described as one of extremes. The greatest annual rainfall in the United States falls in the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest with the heaviest snows in the nation falling in the Rockies. Drought is much more common in the Western States than the rest of the United States. The driest place recorded in the U.S. is Death Valley, California.

The establishment of the United States Bureau of Reclamation to oversee water development projects in seventeen western states resulted in dams and irrigation projects that brought rapid agricultural growth and prosperity to several states. Following World War II, unrestrained population growth in major population centers, such as Las Vegas and Los Angeles strained the water and power resources and water was diverted from agricutural uses to major population centers

The growth of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, including Silicon Valley, has resulted in California becoming the most populous of all the states. The Pacific Coast states have wide areas filled with small towns, farms, and forests, however, Oregon and Washington are seeing rapid growth due to their major port status and a booming high tech sector influenced primarily by the presence of Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond.
