Virginia real estate is bordered by West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia (across the Potomac River) to the north, by Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, by North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, and by Kentucky and West Virginia to the west. The capital of Virginia is Richmond, however, previous capitals are Jamestown (1609-1699) and Williamsburg (1699-1780).

Some of the larger independent cities in Virginia include: Virginia Beach, with a total population of 440,098, the largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Norfolk (2004 population of 237,835); Richmond (2000 population of 197,790); Hampton (2000 population of 146,437); and Alexandria (2000 population of 128,284).*
