El Paso, Texas had a total population of 563,662 as of the 2000 U.S. Census. While not the most populated city in America, the city of El Paso covers more physical territory - some of it sparsely populated - than any other incorporated city in America after San Diego, California. Within El Paso's expansive corporate limits, the Franklin Mountains extend from the north and nearly divide the city into two sections. The Rio Grande Rift lies beneath the Pass with an extinct volcano, Mt. Cristo Rey, just to the west of the city, on the New Mexico side of the Rio Grande. Other volcanic features include Kilbourne hole and Hunt's hole, which are Maar volcanic craters 30 miles (50 km) west of the Franklin Mountains. El Paso is surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert, the easternmost section of the Basin and Range Region.
El Paso is home to The University of Texas at El Paso (founded in 1914 as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, the school received university status in 1967). Fort Bliss, a major United States Army installation, lies to the east and northeast of the city, extending north up to the White Sands Missile Range in neighboring New Mexico.*
