About Allen

Allen is a medium-sized city located in the state of Texas. With a population of 43,457 people and four constituent neighborhoods, Allen is the 56th largest community in Texas.

Allen is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 89.75% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Allen is a city of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Allen who work in management occupations (17.75%), sales jobs (14.40%), and office and administrative support jobs (12.93%).

Also of interest is that Allen has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

In addition, Allen is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Allen is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The city's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Allen's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One notable thing about Allen is that if you need to go anywhere, you're going to have to drive. This is because Allen is primarily built for cars, and if you drive around you will notice that there are lots of shopping centers, parking lots, strip malls, and wide streets. Commuting to work is done by car: 98% of people use private automobiles to get to and from work. Sidewalks? Not so much. In fact, trying to walk in certain parts of town may be a dangerous enterprise.

The city of Allen is a decent size, but despite this, it doesn't have a viable public transit system that people can use to get to work.
