Texas real estate covers more area than any state in America except for Alaska. Texas borders New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north (across the Red River), and Louisiana and Arkansas to the east. To the southwest, across the Rio Grande River, Texas borders the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. To the southeast of Texas lies the Gulf of Mexico.
Texas real estate remained largely rural with cattle ranching, oil, and agriculture as its main industries until World War II, when Texas became largely industrialized. Texas recently surpassed New York as the second most populous state in America, after California.
Major cities and tourist attractions in Texas include: Dallas and Fort Worth, which form the "metroplex," Texas' largest urban area; Houston-Galveston in southeast Texas, the state's second largest metro area; San Antonio home of the Alamo; Austin, the state's capital; Killeen, home to Fort Hood, the largest military post in the US; Tyler, host of the Texas Rose Festival and El Paso; Eagle Pass, and Laredo. These last three cities have significance due to their location on the border with Mexico, making them important trade points. Other well known cities include Brownsville, Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene, Odessa and Midland.*
