The Northeastern United States is a US region defined by the US Census Bureau. The Northeastern region is bordered to the north by Canada, to the west by the Midwest, to the south by the South, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Its largest city, New York City, is also the largest city and metropolitan area in the United States.
One of the more interesting facts about the region is the large numbers of out of state commuters because of the cities of New York and Washington DC. Washington has limited land area necessitating commutes from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware. New York has a large number of people commuting to New York City from bordering neighborhoods in Connecticut and New Jersey. Real estate costs in New York City also influence the choice to reside outside New York state.
