Webster is a somewhat small village located in the state of New York. With a population of 5,162 people and seven constituent neighborhoods, Webster is the 365th largest community in New York.
Unlike some villages where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Webster is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Webster is a village of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Webster who work in teaching (11.30%), sales jobs (11.26%), and office and administrative support jobs (10.02%).
Also of interest is that Webster has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
In addition, Webster is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.
Because of many things, Webster is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Webster really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Webster perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.
Webster is a very car-oriented village. 96.78% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Webster is a small village, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Webster has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.
As is often the case in a small village, Webster doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In terms of college education, Webster is substantially better educated than the typical community in the nation, which has 14.96% of the adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree: 27.63% of adults in Webster have a college degree.
The per capita income in Webster in 2000 was $21,317, which is middle income relative to New York, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $85,268 for a family of four.
