Avalon is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 2,210 people and just one neighborhood, Avalon is the 448th largest community in New Jersey.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Avalon is neither predominently one or the other. There are especially a lot of people living in Avalon who work in sales jobs (18.09%), management occupations (17.54%), and office and administrative support jobs (11.43%).
Avalon is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Avalon is a major retirement destination. In fact, people 65 and over make up 32.35% of the population. For those considering a place to retire, Avalon may be a good choice because much of the town's services and social community are oriented toward the over-65 demographic.
In addition, Avalon is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Avalon are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
Being a small town, Avalon does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The citizens of Avalon are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 37.24% of adults in Avalon have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
