Originating in the 19th century the terms "Midwest", "Middle West" and "Heartland" refer to The Midwestern United States (or Midwest). The midwest is neither the middle nor the west of the United States. The United States Census Bureau refers to the midwest as East North Central States and the West North Central States. The heart of the Midwest is bounded by the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys. The "Old Northwest" (or the "West"), refers to the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. This area is now called the East North Central States by the United States Census Bureau.
Midwestern ethnicity was partially shaped by the relative absence of slavery, except for Missouri, due to 20th-century African-American migration from the South. Large African-American urban centers are Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Minneapolis. Immigration to the midwestern by German, Scandinavian, and Slavic people rounds out the major influences of migration on the ethnic diversity of the region. The Midwest remains a predominantly Protestant region though large concentrations of Catholics are found in Chicago and St. Louis because of Irish, Italian, and Polish immigration in the 1800s.
Education is another of the region's legacies with more Nobel-prize winners having been affiliated with The University of Chicago than with any other university in the world except Cambridge in the UK. Other top ranking Midwestern Universities include the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Notre Dame University, University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
