Quincy is a larger medium-sized coastal city (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Massachusetts. With a population of 88,025 people and 16 constituent neighborhoods, Quincy is the tenth largest community in Massachusetts. Quincy has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.
Unlike some cities, Quincy isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Quincy are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Quincy is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Quincy who work in office and administrative support jobs (18.88%), sales jobs (10.86%), and management occupations (9.01%).
Also of interest is that Quincy has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
One thing noticeable about Quincy, although not a huge city, is that it has a large population of people who are young, single, educated, and upwardly-mobile career starters. That's because Quincy is full of single people in their 20s and 30s and who have undergraduate or graduate degrees and are starting careers in professional occupations. This makes Quincy a pretty good place for young, educated career starters looking to find many people like themselves, with good opportunities for friendships, socializing, romance, and fun.
In addition to being popular with young singles, Quincy is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates." While both of these categories describe educated professionals, urban sophisticates are quite a different demographic. Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.
The city is also nautical, which means that parts of Quincy are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
One downside of living in Quincy is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Quincy, the average commute to work is 31.09 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.
The overall education level of Quincy citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 31.75% of adults in Quincy have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 14.96%.
The per capita income in Quincy in 2000 was $26,001, which is middle income relative to Massachusetts, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $104,004 for a family of four.
Quincy is a very ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Quincy home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Quincy is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Quincy include Irish, Italian, English, German, and Polish.
In addition, Quincy has a lot of people living here who were born outside of the US (20.04%).
