About Mashpee

Mashpee is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Massachusetts. With a population of 12,946 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Mashpee is the 148th largest community in Massachusetts.

Unlike some towns, Mashpee isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Mashpee are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Mashpee is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Mashpee who work in sales jobs (13.89%), office and administrative support jobs (13.64%), and management occupations (9.13%).

Mashpee is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Mashpee's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Mashpee are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

For most residents of Mashpee, getting to work requires a car. In fact, 97.2% of people in Mashpee drive alone to work on most days, making Mashpee a very car-oriented town. In general, car-oriented communities tend to emphasize streets, highways, and ease of parking, often to the detriment of walkability. Strip centers are a feature of Mashpee's landscape.
