The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, Lowell was founded as a planned manufacturing hub for textiles along the Merrimack River northwest of Boston. It prospered as an industrial market during the 19th century, attracting many immigrants and migrant workers to its mills. As a result of its history, Lowell was the first American city to be proclaimed a National Historical Park. The one-time mill district along the river has been partially restored and is part of the Lowell National Historical Park.
