Chevy Chase, MD
Chevy Chase is a very small town located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 2,726 people and four constituent neighborhoods, Chevy Chase is the 219th largest community in Maryland. Chevy Chase has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Chevy Chase is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 97.86% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Chevy Chase is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Chevy Chase who work in legal occupations (17.11%), management occupations (17.04%), and teaching (9.47%).
Of important note, Chevy Chase is also a town of artists. Chevy Chase has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Chevy Chase's character.
And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that Chevy Chase has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.
Also of interest is that Chevy Chase has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 9.26% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
For a small town, there is also a high proportion of single, often educated, people living in Chevy Chase. This is not typical for most smaller communities in America, and adds a feeling of vibrancy to Chevy Chase.
In addition to being popular with young singles, Chevy Chase is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.
Because of many things, Chevy Chase is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Chevy Chase really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Chevy Chase perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.
In Chevy Chase, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 30.60 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.
Despite being a small town, Chevy Chase has a lot of people using the subway to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on the subway are using it to get to good jobs in other cities.
