About Beltsville

Beltsville is a somewhat small town located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 15,725 people and four constituent neighborhoods, Beltsville is the 90th largest community in Maryland.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Beltsville is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Beltsville is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Beltsville who work in office and administrative support jobs (17.32%), sales jobs (10.75%), and management occupations (7.49%).

Also of interest is that Beltsville has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Beltsville is also a college town, where lots of students live while attending area colleges. Because of the high percentage of people living in Beltsville enrolled in college, Beltsville has a number of services, amenities and opportunities geared towards the needs and activities of students.

Beltsville, while not large, also appears to be attractive to some younger, educated professionals, who help shape the character of the town.

In addition to being popular with young singles, Beltsville is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates." While both of these categories describe educated professionals, urban sophisticates are quite a different demographic. Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

One downside of living in Beltsville, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.94 minutes every day commuting to work.
