About Abingdon
Abingdon is a medium-sized coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 23,707 people and just one neighborhood, Abingdon is the 55th largest community in Maryland.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Abingdon is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Abingdon is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Abingdon who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.41%), sales jobs (11.09%), and management occupations (10.55%).
Also of interest is that Abingdon has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Abingdon are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.
One downside of living in Abingdon, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 34.11 minutes every day commuting to work.
For most residents of Abingdon, getting to work requires a car. In fact, 97.2% of people in Abingdon drive alone to work on most days, making Abingdon a very car-oriented town. In general, car-oriented communities tend to emphasize streets, highways, and ease of parking, often to the detriment of walkability. Strip centers are a feature of Abingdon's landscape.
As is often the case in a small town, Abingdon doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
