About Elwood

Elwood is a somewhat small city located in the state of Indiana. With a population of 9,455 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Elwood is the 78th largest community in Indiana. Much of the housing stock in Elwood was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

When you are in Elwood, you'll notice that it is more blue-collar than most other communities in America. 45.2% of Elwood's employed work in blue-collar jobs, while America averages only 24.7% that do. Overall, Elwood is a city of production and manufacturing workers, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Elwood who work in sales jobs (10.85%), office and administrative support jobs (9.76%), and food service (6.75%).

Elwood is very much a car-oriented city. This is because the population of Elwood isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 96.64% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.

Being a small city, Elwood does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
