Carmel, IN Information

About Carmel

Carmel is a medium-sized city located in the state of Indiana. With a population of 37,802 people and nine constituent neighborhoods, Carmel is the 19th largest community in Indiana.

Carmel is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 92.48% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Carmel is a city of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Carmel who work in management occupations (19.13%), sales jobs (17.21%), and office and administrative support jobs (10.99%).

Also of interest is that Carmel has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

In addition, Carmel is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Carmel is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Carmel a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The city's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Carmel has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Carmel's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One notable thing about Carmel is that if you need to go anywhere, you're going to have to drive. This is because Carmel is primarily built for cars, and if you drive around you will notice that there are lots of shopping centers, parking lots, strip malls, and wide streets. Commuting to work is done by car: 98.5% of people use private automobiles to get to and from work. Sidewalks? Not so much. In fact, trying to walk in certain parts of town may be a dangerous enterprise.
