Branford, CT
Branford is a medium-sized coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 28,683 people and seven constituent neighborhoods, Branford is the 32nd largest community in Connecticut.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Branford is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Branford is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Branford who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.92%), sales jobs (11.83%), and management occupations (10.72%).
Branford, while not large, also appears to be attractive to some younger, educated professionals, who help shape the character of the town.
In addition to being popular with young singles, Branford is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.
One of the nice things about Branford is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
Branford is a very car-oriented town. This is because most people - 96.7% - drive by car to work every day, and few people choose alternative modes of transportation, such as public transit, cycling, or walking. In general, car-oriented communities have a layout that emphasizes streets, highways, and ease of parking, and sometimes this can be to the detriment of human-scale priorities such as walkability alongside roads, and public spaces. For example, strip malls are something you will find in Branford.
Being a small town, Branford does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
