About Avon

Avon is a somewhat small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 15,832 people and four constituent neighborhoods, Avon is the 68th largest community in Connecticut.

Avon is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 94.00% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Avon is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Avon who work in management occupations (18.75%), sales jobs (14.62%), and office and administrative support jobs (11.41%).

Also of interest is that Avon has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Of important note, Avon is also a town of artists. Avon has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Avon's character.

Avon, while not large, also appears to be attractive to some younger, educated professionals, who help shape the character of the town.

In addition to being popular with young singles, Avon is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.

Because of many things, Avon is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Avon really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Avon perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

Residents of Avon by-and-large get to work each day by driving: 98.2% use their own cars for their daily commute, making it a very car-oriented town. While Avon may be a convenient place for driving around town, the negative aspect of this is that places that are suitable for walking or bicycling to and from work or stores may be few and far between. In general, car-oriented communities emphasize roads and convenience of driving, but not have a lot of walking-friendly areas to get from home to work, and tend not to have a lot of public transportation options.
