Sacramento is the county seat of Sacramento County and the capital of California. Sacramento real estate is located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River. Much of Sacramento's real estate to the west of the city (in Yolo County) is a flood control basin. As a result, the greater metropolitan area is only four miles west of downtown (as West Sacramento, California) but 30 miles northeast and east, into the Sierra Nevada foothills, and 10 miles to the south into valley farmland.
During the gold rush, Sacramento was a major distribution point, a commercial and agricultural center, and a transportation terminus. US Congress authorized the Sacramento port construction project in July 1946 creating a deepwater port connected to San Francisco Bay by a channel through Suisun Bay and the Sacramento River Delta. Sacramento is the shipping and rail center for the Sacramento Valley where fruit, vegetables, rice, wheat, dairy goods and beef are produced. Food processing is among the major industries in the area. Today, this modern city enjoys a temperate climate, growing population, and a bustling economy in the heart of the state of California and historic central valley.*
