About Juneau

Juneau is a medium-sized coastal borough (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Alaska. With a population of 30,711 people and six constituent neighborhoods, Juneau is the second largest community in Alaska.

Juneau is neither predominently blue-collar or white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Juneau is a borough of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Juneau who work in office and administrative support jobs (19.19%), management occupations (9.97%), and sales jobs (7.60%).

Also of interest is that Juneau has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Juneau, while not large, also appears to be attractive to some younger, educated professionals, who help shape the character of the borough.

The borough is also nautical, which means that parts of Juneau are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Juneau spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 16.36 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the borough are less than they would otherwise be.

Although the majority of commuting trips in the borough are by private automobile, Juneau is somewhat unusual for a borough of its size for having a substantial number of people who use public transportation. The bus helps to get a lot of people to and from their jobs every morning, which benefits everyone in the Juneau area by reducing both traffic and air pollution.
