About Alabaster

Alabaster is a medium-sized city located in the state of Alabama. With a population of 23,210 people and five constituent neighborhoods, Alabaster is the 21st largest community in Alabama.

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Alabaster is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Alabaster is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Alabaster who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.65%), sales jobs (14.59%), and management occupations (12.12%).

Also of interest is that Alabaster has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Alabaster is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The city's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Alabaster's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One downside of living in Alabaster, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.29 minutes every day commuting to work.

For most residents of Alabaster, getting to work requires a car. In fact, 99.4% of people in Alabaster drive alone to work on most days, making Alabaster a very car-oriented city. In general, car-oriented communities tend to emphasize streets, highways, and ease of parking, often to the detriment of walkability. Strip centers are a feature of Alabaster's landscape.
