Malta is a very small town located in the state of Idaho. With a population of 1,052 people and just one neighborhood, Malta is the 83rd largest community in Idaho.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Malta is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Malta is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and farmers, fishers, or foresters. There are especially a lot of people living in Malta who work in farm management (21.32%), office and administrative support jobs (12.24%), and sales jobs (6.58%).
You will also find that a lot of people in Malta work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 10.66% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Malta spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 17.51 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.
Being a small town, Malta does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The percentage of people in Malta who are college-educated is somewhat higher than the average US community of 14.96%: 21.07% of adults in Malta have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Malta in 2000 was $15,257, which is middle income relative to Idaho, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $61,028 for a family of four.
The people who call Malta home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Malta is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Malta include English, German, Swedish, and Irish.
The most common language spoken in Malta is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
