North Haven is a medium-sized coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 23,035 people and three constituent neighborhoods, North Haven is the 46th largest community in Connecticut.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, North Haven is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, North Haven is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in North Haven who work in office and administrative support jobs (17.75%), sales jobs (9.97%), and teaching (9.21%).
In addition, North Haven is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.
Because of many things, North Haven is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making North Haven a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, North Haven has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, North Haven's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
One of the nice things about North Haven is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
Residents of North Haven by-and-large get to work each day by driving: 97.4% use their own cars for their daily commute, making it a very car-oriented town. While North Haven may be a convenient place for driving around town, the negative aspect of this is that places that are suitable for walking or bicycling to and from work or stores may be few and far between. In general, car-oriented communities emphasize roads and convenience of driving, but not have a lot of walking-friendly areas to get from home to work, and tend not to have a lot of public transportation options.
The education level of North Haven citizens is substantially higher than the average US city or town, as 32.30% of adults in North Haven have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in North Haven in 2000 was $29,919, which is upper middle income relative to Connecticut, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $119,676 for a family of four. However, North Haven contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
