About Ledyard

Ledyard is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 14,682 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Ledyard is the 72nd largest community in Connecticut.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Ledyard is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Ledyard is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Ledyard who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.93%), sales jobs (10.12%), and teaching (8.14%).

Also of interest is that Ledyard has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

There are quite a few people in the armed forces living in Ledyard, and when you visit or drive around town, you will see military people in and out of uniform, shopping, enjoying life, and being part of the community.

In addition, Ledyard is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Ledyard is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Ledyard a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Ledyard has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Ledyard's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Ledyard are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

Ledyard is a very car-oriented town. This is because most people - 98.4% - drive by car to work every day, and few people choose alternative modes of transportation, such as public transit, cycling, or walking. In general, car-oriented communities have a layout that emphasizes streets, highways, and ease of parking, and sometimes this can be to the detriment of human-scale priorities such as walkability alongside roads, and public spaces. For example, strip malls are something you will find in Ledyard.

Ledyard is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
