About Columbia

Columbia is a very small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 4,971 people and just one neighborhood, Columbia is the 129th largest community in Connecticut.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Columbia is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Columbia is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Columbia who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.07%), teaching (11.62%), and sales jobs (10.95%).

Also of interest is that Columbia has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

In addition, Columbia is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.

Because of many things, Columbia is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Columbia a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Columbia has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Columbia's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

Columbia is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Columbia, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 98.23% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.

Being a small town, Columbia does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
