Mill Valley, CA Information

About Mill Valley

Mill Valley is a somewhat small coastal city (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of California. With a population of 13,560 people and five constituent neighborhoods, Mill Valley is the 368th largest community in California.

Mill Valley is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 94.27% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Mill Valley is a city of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Mill Valley who work in management occupations (19.74%), sales jobs (14.40%), and office and administrative support jobs (8.42%).

Of important note, Mill Valley is also a city of artists. Mill Valley has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Mill Valley's character.

Also of interest is that Mill Valley has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

A relatively large number of people in Mill Valley telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 15.43% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Mill Valley, while not large, also appears to be attractive to some younger, educated professionals, who help shape the character of the city.

In addition to being popular with young singles, Mill Valley is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.

One of the nice things about Mill Valley is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the city are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Mill Valley, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 31.89 minutes every day commuting to work.

Mill Valley is a small city, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
