About Decatur

Decatur is a larger medium-sized city located in the state of Alabama. With a population of 53,953 people and 14 constituent neighborhoods, Decatur is the eighth largest community in Alabama.

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Decatur is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Decatur is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and production and manufacturing workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Decatur who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.54%), sales jobs (11.34%), and management occupations (8.08%).

One of the benefits of Decatur is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 19.11 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

"If you live in Decatur, you are going to have to drive to get to work," say area residents. At least that is what most Decatur residents do (97.8%). Decatur is primarily built for cars, and driving around town will bare this out. Shopping centers, parking lots, strip malls, and wide streets are what you'll find. Sidewalks? Sure. But not everywhere, and walking to most places can be downright scary.
