About Cherokee

Cherokee is a very small town located in the state of Alabama. With a population of 1,260 people and just one neighborhood, Cherokee is the 267th largest community in Alabama.

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Cherokee is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 49.5% of the Cherokee workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Cherokee is a town of production and manufacturing workers, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Cherokee who work in office and administrative support jobs (12.80%), sales jobs (9.95%), and healthcare (4.50%).

Cherokee is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Cherokee isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 96.84% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.

As is often the case in a small town, Cherokee doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Cherokee Information and Demographics

The per capita income in Cherokee in 2000 was $12,431, which is low income relative to Alabama and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $49,724 for a family of four.

The most common language spoken in Cherokee is English.
