About Westmere

Westmere is a somewhat small town located in the state of New York. With a population of 7,250 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Westmere is the 287th largest community in New York.

Westmere is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 92.46% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Westmere is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Westmere who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.77%), management occupations (12.79%), and teaching (9.74%).

Also of interest is that Westmere has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

For a small town, there is also a high proportion of single, often educated, people living in Westmere. This is not typical for most smaller communities in America, and adds a feeling of vibrancy to Westmere.

In addition to being popular with young singles, Westmere is also home to many people who can be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Westmere spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 17.95 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.

Westmere is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Westmere, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 97.62% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.

As is often the case in a small town, Westmere doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Westmere Information and Demographics

The education level of Westmere citizens is very high relative to the national average among all cities (14.96%): 43.26% of adults in Westmere have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.

The per capita income in Westmere in 2000 was $28,790, which is upper middle income relative to New York, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $115,160 for a family of four.

Westmere is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Westmere home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Westmere is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Westmere include Italian, Irish, German, English, Polish, Russian, and French.
