Water Mill is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,872 people and just one neighborhood, Water Mill is the 652nd largest community in New York.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Water Mill is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Water Mill is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Water Mill who work in sales jobs (18.92%), teaching (9.78%), and office and administrative support jobs (9.57%).
Of important note, Water Mill is also a town of artists. Water Mill has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Water Mill's character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 13.06% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Water Mill is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.
Because of many things, Water Mill is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Water Mill a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Water Mill has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Water Mill's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
One of the nice things about Water Mill is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
Even though Water Mill is a smaller town, it has many people who hop on public transportation - mostly the subway - for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.
The citizens of Water Mill are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 44.77% of adults in Water Mill have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
The per capita income in Water Mill in 2000 was $49,346, which is wealthy relative to New York and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $197,384 for a family of four.
