Winston is a tiny town located in the state of New Mexico. With a population of 148 people and just one neighborhood, Winston is the 118th largest community in New Mexico.
Unlike some towns , Winston isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Winston are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Winston is a town of sales and office workers, managers, and farmers, fishers, or foresters. There are especially a lot of people living in Winston who work in sales jobs (47.37%), farm management (36.84%), and management occupations (0.00%).
You will also find that a lot of people in Winston work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 47.37% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Winston is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Seniors make up 54.73% of Winston's population, making it a popular place to retire. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, Winston is good place for those over 65 to settle, as they will find many opportunities for socializing, as well as having access to many services oriented toward seniors.
Winston is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Winston isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 100% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
Being a small town, Winston does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In terms of college education, Winston ranks among the least educated cities in the nation, as only 0.00% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Winston in 2000 was $15,328, which is upper middle income relative to New Mexico, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $61,312 for a family of four.
Winston is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Winston home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Winston is White, followed by African-American. Winston also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 23.65% of the town's residents. Important ancestries of people in Winston include Italian, German, Swedish, English, Irish, and New Zealander.
The most common language spoken in Winston is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
