Chacon is a tiny town located in the state of New Mexico. With a population of 148 people and just one neighborhood, Chacon is the 119th largest community in New Mexico.
When you are in Chacon, you'll notice that it is more blue-collar than most other communities in America. 44.1% of Chacon's employed work in blue-collar jobs, while America averages only 24.7% that do. Overall, Chacon is a town of construction workers and builders, professionals, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Chacon who work in healthcare (23.53%), legal occupations (17.65%), and office and administrative support jobs (14.71%).
Chacon is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Chacon is a major retirement destination. In fact, people 65 and over make up 29.73% of the population. For those considering a place to retire, Chacon may be a good choice because much of the town's services and social community are oriented toward the over-65 demographic.
One downside of living in Chacon is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Chacon, the average commute to work is 36.62 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.
Chacon is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Chacon isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 100% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
Being a small town, Chacon does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The rate of college-level education in Chacon is quite a bit lower than the national average among all cities of 14.96%: just 11.57% of people here over 25 have a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree.
The per capita income in Chacon in 2000 was $11,536, which is lower middle income relative to New Mexico, and low income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $46,144 for a family of four.
The people who call Chacon home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. People of Hispanic or Latino origin are the most prevalent group in Chacon, accounting for 100% of the town's residents (people of Hispanic or Latino origin can be of any race). The most prevalent race in Chacon is African-American, followed by Native American.
The most common language spoken in Chacon is Spanish.
