Abiquiu is a very small town located in the state of New Mexico. With a population of 1,211 people and just one neighborhood, Abiquiu is the 85th largest community in New Mexico.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Abiquiu is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Abiquiu is a town of professionals, managers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Abiquiu who work in management occupations (10.26%), office and administrative support jobs (9.93%), and building maintenance and grounds keeping (7.78%).
Of important note, Abiquiu is also a town of artists. Abiquiu has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Abiquiu's character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 13.37% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One downside of living in Abiquiu is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Abiquiu, the average commute to work is 33.85 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.
Abiquiu is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
In terms of college education, Abiquiu is substantially better educated than the typical community in the nation, which has 14.96% of the adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree: 27.27% of adults in Abiquiu have a college degree.
The per capita income in Abiquiu in 2000 was $19,230, which is wealthy relative to New Mexico, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $76,920 for a family of four.
