What we provide

We reveal the quality of every public school district and show you how each district compares to other public school districts within the state and across the nation. Our exclusive public schools ratings combine student-to-teacher ratios (smaller classes mean more personal attention), spending per student on core instruction, and rates of graduation. These characteristics have been shown to powerfully correlate with increased student success, higher SAT scores, and greatest college enrollments. We further refine district-wide ratings with the education level of adults in each neighborhood, because research has shown that adults who are more educated support education most strongly.

By distilling these important indicators into a single set of rankings, we make it possible for you to instantly and accurately compare the quality of public school districts within your search radius. If you imagine how difficult this same task would be if you were only given raw statistics for each individual district, you can quickly realize just how powerful a tool NeighborhoodScout's school rankings are.

“NeighborhoodScout is one of the most interesting sites”
The Wall Street Journal

“What intrigued me was how precise and comprehensive the site's search engines are in helping consumers find neighborhoods to match their criteria and needs.”

About the data

In the example below, the school district for this neighborhood ranks 8 (where 10 is best) relative to all other school districts in the nation, and 10 relative to other California school districts.

Because we report only two numerical rankings this data might appear, at first glance, to be not very informative. But in fact, this report is deceptively powerful. These rankings are our own uniquely-developed index, based on our research, to rate every school district in America.

By distilling these important indicators into a single ranking, we make it possible for you to instantly and accurately compare the quality of public school districts within your search radius.

And if you are curious about specific data such as school enrollment numbers and specific student-teacher ratios, just click on the "View school district details" link to see highly detailed information about every school in that district.

School data reporting from schools to the Federal Government, and what it means for parents

The quality of public schools varies a great deal across America. Because of this, it is always possible that you won't find any high quality public schools within your search radius. Despite this, NeighborhoodScout lets you see where the best ranking districts are so that you can make the best possible choice within your specified radius. If you do find only poor-ranking school districts within your search, you will then know that you should consider broadening your search area.

Another thing to be aware of is that public school districts are large, usually covering an area of several neighborhoods. Because our neighborhoods are of a higher resolution than the school districts, you might find that adjoining neighborhoods do not show any differences in school quality, even though there may be. Unfortunately, because reporting by individual schools can be inconsistent and there is no national standardized testing in the United States, there is no way to show our data at a higher resolution. That is why the education level of adults in the neighborhood is a powerful addition that we provide.
