Palermo is a tiny town located in the state of North Dakota. With a population of 278 people and just one neighborhood, Palermo is the 124th largest community in North Dakota.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Palermo is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Palermo is a town of managers, service providers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Palermo who work in farm management (27.41%), food service (11.85%), and office and administrative support jobs (10.37%).
You will also find that a lot of people in Palermo work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 19.26% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Palermo is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Palermo's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.
One downside of living in Palermo, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 31.01 minutes every day commuting to work.
Palermo is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
The citizens of Palermo have a very low rate of college education: just 8.38% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, compared to a national average of 14.96% for all cities.
The per capita income in Palermo in 2000 was $12,868, which is lower middle income relative to North Dakota, and low income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $51,472 for a family of four.
The people who call Palermo home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Palermo is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Palermo include Norwegian, German, Irish, English, French, and Scandinavian.
The most common language spoken in Palermo is English.
