Kenmare is a very small town located in the state of North Dakota. With a population of 1,684 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Kenmare is the 34th largest community in North Dakota. Much of the housing stock in Kenmare was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Kenmare is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Kenmare is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Kenmare who work in farm management (15.27%), office and administrative support jobs (11.36%), and sales jobs (10.44%).
In addition, many people in Kenmare have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.
A relatively large number of people in Kenmare telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 16.60% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One of the benefits of Kenmare is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 16.49 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.
Being a small town, Kenmare does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The education level of Kenmare citizens, measured as those with bachelor's degrees or advanced degrees, is similar to the national average for all American cities and towns. 15.16% of adults 25 and older in Kenmare have a college degree.
The per capita income in Kenmare in 2000 was $14,772, which is lower middle income relative to North Dakota and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $59,088 for a family of four.
