Fortuna is a tiny town located in the state of North Dakota. With a population of 165 people and just one neighborhood, Fortuna is the 134th largest community in North Dakota. Fortuna has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Fortuna is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 87.34% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Fortuna is a town of managers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Fortuna who work in farm management (37.97%), management occupations (8.86%), and healthcare (7.59%).
Of important note, Fortuna is also a town of artists. Fortuna has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Fortuna's character.
In addition, many people in Fortuna have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.
A relatively large number of people in Fortuna telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 7.79% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One of the benefits of Fortuna is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 15.14 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.
As is often the case in a small town, Fortuna doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The population of Fortuna has a very low overall level of education: only 7.69% of people over 25 hold a 4-year college degree or higher.
The per capita income in Fortuna in 2000 was $13,864, which is lower middle income relative to North Dakota and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $55,456 for a family of four.
The people who call Fortuna home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Fortuna is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Fortuna include Norwegian, German, Danish, English, Swedish, and French Canadian.
The most common language spoken in Fortuna is English.
