About Westport

Westport is a very small town located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 1,801 people and just one neighborhood, Westport is the 320th largest community in North Carolina.

Westport is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 88.06% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Westport is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Westport who work in management occupations (17.06%), sales jobs (15.25%), and business and financial occupations (11.51%).

Also of interest is that Westport has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 7.46% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

One downside of living in Westport, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 36.56 minutes every day commuting to work.

Westport is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Westport, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 100% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.

Being a small town, Westport does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
