Ocracoke is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 730 people and just one neighborhood, Ocracoke is the 398th largest community in North Carolina.
Unlike some towns , Ocracoke isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Ocracoke are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Ocracoke is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Ocracoke who work in sales jobs (22.79%), office and administrative support jobs (15.67%), and food service (10.26%).
A relatively large number of people in Ocracoke telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 7.69% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Ocracoke is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Ocracoke are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
Residents of the town have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 17.33 minutes getting to work every day.
Being a small town, Ocracoke does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The education level of Ocracoke citizens is substantially higher than the average US city or town, as 25.98% of adults in Ocracoke have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Ocracoke in 2000 was $18,032, which is upper middle income relative to North Carolina, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $72,128 for a family of four.

The most common language spoken in Ocracoke is English.
