About Merritt

Merritt is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 1,110 people and just one neighborhood, Merritt is the 367th largest community in North Carolina.

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Merritt is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 43.1% of the Merritt workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Merritt is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and production and manufacturing workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Merritt who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.69%), teaching (11.27%), and sales jobs (7.85%).

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Merritt are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities. This is certainly the case with Merritt, which has a vibrant tourist economy.

One downside of living in Merritt, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 32.11 minutes every day commuting to work.

Merritt is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Merritt Information and Demographics
