Atkinson is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 221 people and just one neighborhood, Atkinson is the 448th largest community in North Carolina.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Atkinson is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 35.6% of the Atkinson workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Atkinson is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Atkinson who work in office and administrative support jobs (20.19%), sales jobs (9.62%), and community and social services (5.77%).
One of the nice things about Atkinson is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
One downside of living in Atkinson, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.90 minutes every day commuting to work.
Atkinson is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Atkinson, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 100% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.
As is often the case in a small town, Atkinson doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The citizens of Atkinson are slightly less educated than the national average of 14.96% for the average city or town: 13.92% of adults in Atkinson have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Atkinson in 2000 was $18,135, which is upper middle income relative to North Carolina, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $72,540 for a family of four.
