Granada is a very small town located in the state of Minnesota. With a population of 1,058 people and just one neighborhood, Granada is the 362nd largest community in Minnesota. Much of the housing stock in Granada was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Granada is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Granada is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Granada who work in office and administrative support jobs (14.83%), farm management (9.95%), and teaching (7.68%).
Another important characteristic of Granada is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 7.79% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Granada spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 18.92 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.
Granada is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Granada isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 97.7% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
As is often the case in a small town, Granada doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The citizens of Granada are slightly less educated than the national average of 14.96% for the average city or town: 13.83% of adults in Granada have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Granada in 2000 was $15,539, which is low income relative to Minnesota, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $62,156 for a family of four.
The people who call Granada home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Granada is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Granada include German, Irish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, English, and Danish.
The most common language spoken in Granada is English.
