Lachine is a very small town located in the state of Michigan. With a population of 2,245 people and just one neighborhood, Lachine is the 361st largest community in Michigan.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Lachine is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 36.5% of the Lachine workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Lachine is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Lachine who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.40%), sales jobs (9.48%), and food service (7.63%).
Lachine is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Lachine is a very car-oriented town. 97.18% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Lachine is a small town, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Lachine has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.
Being a small town, Lachine does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The population of Lachine has a very low overall level of education: only 9.37% of people over 25 hold a 4-year college degree or higher.
The per capita income in Lachine in 2000 was $17,050, which is lower middle income relative to Michigan, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $68,200 for a family of four.
